Keep ‘Accessibility’ in mind when formatting your email…

Did you know that approximately 8% of the male population experiences some degree of color blindness? And, guess what — I’m part of that 8%.  If you have “normal” color vision, you likely see either text or a number distinctly presented in the circle of color shown below.  What do I see?  Dots.  A bunch of dots of different size, all in varying shades of tan.

Why does this matter with respect to your email?  Well, many people like to “mark up” email replies using a different color as a way of conveying the separation of information.  For example, if this were my original text:

How many people do we expect to come to the event? Do any of the people have special dietary requirements? What is the maximum number of people that the fire marshal will allow in room A? What about room B?

And you kindly replied like this:

How many people do we expect to come to the event? 300 Do any of the people have special dietary requirements? No, I don’t think so. What is the maximum number of people that the fire marshal will allow in room A? only about 150 What about room B? think the same

Unfortunately, I am going to see it like this (at best):

How many people do we expect to come to the event? 300 Do any of the people have special dietary requirements? No, I don’t think so. What is the maximum number of people that the fire marshal will allow in room A? only about 150 What about room B? think the same

All of your hard work to make it stand out…well…it’s not going to help me.  If you want to display the text “in line”, adding a background shading or changing the size of the text or…adding some characters or…just about anything other than changing the color of the text will work:

How many people do we expect to come to the event? ** 300 ** Do any of the people have special dietary requirements? ** No, I don’t think so. What is the maximum number of people that the fire marshal will allow in room A? ** only about 150 What about room B? ** think the same

Thanks for your time!
