I had pretty much forgotten about 1980’s Flash Gordon until a friend of mine brought the DVD over tonight. The story line was just as forgettable this time around, but the costumes were amazing…possibly even amazeballs. There were at least 50 different outfits that would guarantee 1st place in the office Halloween pageant whether anyone recognized the source or not. The tone of the movie is definitely “dated”, but most of the costumes could easily appear in a 2020 reboot.
If it has been as long ago for you as it had been for me, you owe it to yourself to watch this gem again. Did I mention how great the costumes are? Plus, don’t forget the original score by Queen (which I happen to have on an 8-track cassette floating around here somewhere).
SIDE NOTE: Listen closely during the movie and you’ll likely identify one of the minor characters as having been played by Richard O’Brien, Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Other famous actors making an appearance are Timothy Dalton (aka 1980’s James Bond), Topol (aka Tevye from Fidler on the Roof), and Max von Sydow (aka Father Merrin in The Exorcist)!
